SDHA Commercial Producers of the Year —
Lonetree Ranch, Sturgis, SD was selected as this year’s Commercial Producer. The
Reinhold family headed by Tige, son and daughter-in-law Larry and Robin and
their 5 children, Molly, Danny, Caleb, Rachel and Julia, run a commercial
Hereford ranch east of Sturgis, SD. They also run registered Quarter Horses and
in their “spare time” operate a very popular Bible camp, Rainbow Bible Ranch,
which has a very definite western theme. Emmanuel and Hazel Reinhold homesteaded
the ranch in the early 1900s. Some of their first cows were Shorthorns bred to
Herefords. Eventually the family changed to all Hereford breeding. At one time
they ran a registered herd. Today the Reinholds run a sizable commercial
Hereford herd.
About Taking
Pictures...
A well-taken picture is an excellent tool in marketing
your consignments. On the other hand, a bad picture is worse than no picture at
all. Please take the time to have your animals ready before someone comes to
take pictures. A round pen made with portable panels makes getting a good
picture much easier. Consider the least amount of background clutter when you
set it up. Getting your calves in ahead of time, washing and clipping them also
makes them much more attractive. We know all of this requires time and effort,
but we feel the results will be of much benefit to you. This extra effort will
give a professional image to the entire sale, and hopefully, more dollars in
your pocket!
About Tattooing Your Calves...
In order to have a clear, easily readable tattoo, keep in
mind the following:
1.
Clean the ear with a rag or paper towel before you begin.
2.
Apply ink to the area you wish the tattoo to be.
3.
Squeeze the tattoo pliers firmly.
4.
Rub the tattooed area thoroughly, forcing the ink into the holes.
Please have this done at least one week prior to the
sale.
